STDs and STIs remain a pressing health and public concern that sometimes affects interpersonal relationship. Miramistin is commonly used in venereology in order to reduce risk of getting STDs for both men and women.

Sexually transmitted diseases keep breaking world record with a number of patients. Every year nearly 340 million people up to 49 years are diagnosed with different types of STDs. Experts recognize more than 30 types of sexually transmitted bacteria that cause infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, genital herpes and candidiasis, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, mycoplasmosis. And, unfortunately, this list continues to grow.

What is So Dangerous about STDs?
It is important to note that quite a number of STIs do not have obvious signs or symptoms right after the exposure. Many of them are asymptomatic, so an infected person can become a silent spreader. Like any other diseases, STDs require an early detection and treatment, otherwise they may lead to a serious, life-threatening complications, for instance, STDs can increase risk of contracting HIV and HPV can cause cervical and other cancers. Gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis are prime examples of genital infections that may cause pelvic inflammatory disease. Also having an STI during pregnancy can hurt the unborn baby’s health. It may cause premature labor, low birth weight, developmental problems, brain damage or even stillbirth.

    Efficacy of Miramistin against STDs.

Miramistin® has a wide antimicrobial effect and can be used for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (i.e. syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes and candidiasis) for both men and women 1.
Miramistin® is shown to be active against many bacteria, complex viruses and fungi. That makes Miramistin® an effective solution not only for prevention STIs but in complex treatment of genitourinary disorders (e.g. urethritis, urethroprostatitis, vulvovaginitis) in males and females 1.

Miramistin as a treatment for different types of STDs

It is a popular question on the Internet how to use Miramistin for intimate hygiene. We analyzed the most frequently asked questions and here are some tips on how to use Miramistin in order to prevent STIs.

    Syphilis and gonorrhea treatment.

Miramistin solution is used for prevention of gonorrhea and syphilis after having unprotected sex. It is important to use the solution within 2 hours after sexual intercourse. Use in men: spray 2-3 ml of Miramistin into urethra using a urological applicator, wait for 2-3 minutes. Use in women: inject 1-2 ml of drug into urethra and 5-10 ml into vagina replacing the urological applicator with a gynecological nozzle. Wait for 2-3 minutes 1. It is also recommended to irrigate skin of the genitals (including penis), pubis and inner surfaces of thighs with the solution. Please empty your bladder before the procedure and try to avoid urinating in 2 hours 1.

See full prescribing information for medication. The solution is used for prevention of infection after having unprotected sex. Indications and usage for both men and women are mentioned above.

Is Miramistin effective against papillomas and genital herpes?

Yes it is. Miramistin is active against these viruses. Genital herpes: Miramistin can be applied directly on to blisters and open sores as well as ulcers and erosions that are left after blisters’ breakout in order to protect genitals from bacterial infection 1. HPV: Follow basic rules of antiseptic treatment in venereal diseases.

    Ureaplasma and chlamydia treatment.

Miramistin solution is used for prevention of chlamydia, chlamydial urethritis and vulvovaginitis (these also can be caused by ureaplasma). Complex treatment of urethritis: inject 2-3 ml of Miramistin into urethra 1-2 times a day for 10 days. Vulvovaginitis treatment: directly irrigate vagina with Miramistin or insert antiseptic-impregnated tampon into vagina for 2 hours. Dosage range and duration of treatment should be proposed by doctor1.

    Miramistin solution and hepatitis.

To reduce risk of hepatitis infection use an antiseptic solution of Miramistin. The drug is effective as an emergency antiviral treatment of external genitalia and nearby areas (see the scheme indicated in the instruction). It is important to remember that hepatitis may spread through contact with blood, therefore be careful, clean and disinfect manicure, tattooing or piercing tools and any other cosmetic or therapeutic equipment. The most effective way to prevent the transmission of STDs is trying to avoid situations with an increased infection risk.
